League of Legends

LoL is now the most played game in the world and it is of the reasonably new genre Tower Defence or MOBA of which it was one of the very first to arise from. It has simple enough mechanics and yet deep enough knowledge requirements so as anyone from casual to hardcore can jump in and enjoy. Its genre has amazing differences to anything else on the market and every game within it not just LoL is constantly evolving and it doesn't plan on stopping it's been interesting just watching this mass of infantile scrambling; yawn, stretch and adjust in its ever constant progression to brilliance.

LoL's strongest talents are its accessibility and fun, this is why it is so popular. Its RPG elements are shallow but wide with a wonderfully eclectic mix of characters and its lore is a little ridiculous but in a nice way. The functionality all-round is highly likeable with a well honed, appealing and intuitive interface making navigation a delight. Being competitive and effortlessly promoting strong team work comes naturally for this game as does, nurturing skill of sorts. Its constantly trying to make a better community which is no small feat and I tip my hat at this I think they have been doing from what I can tell the best job of any game on the market by a long way. There are a few things that bug me though like the addiction mechanics, the over priced macro-economy and amount if people pugging it instead of maintaining a team pool. Some other let downs are the time I spend being reasonably bored in 5v5 although this has been tweaked considerably and will no doubt be fixed by the time you've read this. The lack of "how to play ranked" tutorials is a little bit of a let down also in fact there are no official guides.

Dominion a capture the flag like arena is a lot more fun then Classic but it exemplifies the characters imbalance which limits who you can chose if you want to win, but then again I like this to a certain extent that freedom of choice and does it really need balance as opposed to variety... maybe. Dominion's games are 15-25min instead of the 5v5's which are around 25-55 and the 3v3 is around 20-40 which is not too bad... something still bothers me though and I think I know what it is its the always present trolls or trolling of suspected trolls by trolls and the lag/ dc'ing which when coupled with the length of time a game takes can at times be soul destroying (I swear this improved dramatically after writing this and they are introducing local servers). Things are constantly being improved in LoL and its no longer the game it once was, its one popular game in fact its number one.
